Saturday Afternoon Wordplay

September 18, 2010

The best thing that happened to me yesterday was realizing that “word” is a word and “noun” is a noun. A lot of analytic philosophers would have a jolly field day with that. Willard Van Orman Quine, for one. It’s definitely been a while since I thought about that guy or any of his colleagues, but who better to invoke upon discovering rare occurrences of type-token reciprocity or harmony or whatever term you want to use?

And now, unrelatedly, a quatrain that was born almost fully formed from the head of a Facebook status:

I saw a horse-drawn carriage.
Can’t say I was impressed.
The shading was amateurish,
The perspective medieval at best.

Damn it, I should have named this post “Saturday Afternoon Horseplay.” Too late now.
