I Am a Poet, and Down Is Where I Throw It

I heard, recently, that rhyming and/or metrical verse is not currently appreciated by the modern North American poetry community. I don’t know what the eff that’s about, and I guess I probably don’t care. I been rhymin’ since before I was talkin’, writin’ since before I was walkin’. Quit your invective and git some perspective. I’ma rupture your freeform structure and cripple it with couplets. Ungh. Whaaat. Strayer the Player in da heezy, throwin’ it down A-B-zy like it’s easy, you knowin’ it, clown. Before you be slammin’ her, check out her pentameter.

Below is an imitation of Edna St. Vincent Millay, who may have been my mother or my wife in another life. I am not happy with the first half of the second-last line, but the rest of it’s fine. It’s an ABAB iambic pentameter thing in the genre of “burn” or “zing.”

For our next meeting we have to bring in and read a sample of the work of a poet we’ve recently discovered. My only dilemma is which Jay-Z track to choose. Pretty stoked that I get to do a gangsta throwdown soon, even though it’s not (yet…) my work that will be thrown down.

“I Shall Forget You Presently,” You Said

“I shall forget you presently,” you said,
“my dear”—but no: you didn’t say, you wrote;
And, hence, I did not hear; rather, I read.
My dear, it is a printed text I quote.
If you had said it—“We are done forever”—
I surely would have listened, and believed,
And wept. Instead, by penning something clever,
You have exposed yourself as self-deceived.
Forget—well, try—or die. Obey your heart’s
Command. Move blocks or continents away.
It matters not: your parting verse imparts
A life undying to my “little day.”
Further, my dear, I ask: could you have written
Those smiting stanzas were you not still smitten?
